ABOUT RESPECT USE

Language: Although this site was originally written in English, it is available for use by webmasters of all types in all countries. I welcome and encourage translations into languages other than the ones listed.

Origin: This site came into existence when I discovered that one of my websites pulls nearly 40% foreign-visitor traffic. I also noted several sites in other languages that had stolen and reposted works from my galleries. I clearly state my usage policy in English, but did not do so in any additional languages. I thought perhaps if a more universal respect-use policy became available to webmasters, some of this might be avoided in the future. This is an expansion and generalization partially inspired by the Online Fanarts Protection (a Japanese fanart anti-theft site).

Purpose: People often do not request permission for use due to language barriers. This site exists to debunk this excuse, particularly where galleries, paysites, and image forums are concerned. Most websites have an easily recognizable e-mail address where one may contact the owner. Numerous free online translation services also exist in case you need to speak with the webmaster in their native language. These services are sometimes less than perfect, but they will suffice to get a point across.

Respect: Respect is a common language that everyone can speak. If you would like to use or repost someone else's content (be it artwork, fiction, code, information, design, graphics, et cetera), the most respectful first step is to ask for permission. If they do not wish their creations to be used freely by another, respect their decision and refrain.

Consequences: Many people falsely believe that there are no consequences for using other peoples' work without consent. This is absolutely untrue. Many websites have been removed from the web due to repeated thefts. When a creator becomes exasperated, a few thieves can ruin it for everyone. They delete their archive permanently and no longer share their work with others. Help prevent this from happening by respecting usage policies!
